The Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools is responsible for drug and violence prevention activities and programs in all Sumner County schools. Programs include:
Unity.Com, after school academic enrichment program
C.A.R.E. Teams, educational support groups for elementary and middle schools
Youth Alive & Free and STARS, high school student assistance program
Just Say NO clubs for elementary and middle schools
NOAHS (NO Alcohol in High School) Promise in all seven high schools
NO Bullying Program, in elementary and middle schools
Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation
Character Education
Family Resource Center
Prevention Coordinators working to bring resources to all middle and high schools
Crisis Response Planning and teacher training.
These programs focus on reducing risk factors for young people by promoting protective factors. This office reports to the Director of Schools as a part of the administrative staff, and is coordinated by Pat Conner.
Additionally, the Safe and Drug Free Schools Office oversees the districts School Resource Officer Program. The SRO program is a collaborative effort between the Sumner County Sheriffs Department and Sumner County schools. A Sheriffs deputy is assigned to all seven high schools under the supervision of Captain Dwayne Wright.
The Title IV, Safe & Drug Free Schools Program is currently in the
process of filing its yearly application request for available funds for
Summer County. Comments and suggestions from parents and community
members on effective programs for implementation with these funds are
welcome. Additionally, SDFS program evaluation results, including
results of the annual student alcohol and drug survey, are public domain
and available by contacting Pat Conner at 451-6500 or at
pat.conner@sumnerschools.org.
The Safe & Drug Free Schools department is pleased to
announce the availability of a new program for parents of high school students
that focuses on alcohol education.AlcoholEdu
for High School is a web-based prevention program that engages high
school students with research-based alcohol education.AlcoholEdu for High School helps
students contend with a culture that too often encourages, rather than
discourages, underage drinking.

Once parents complete the course we strongly suggest that
you talk with your child about what you have learned about the dangers of
alcohol use by young people.
This program is funded by the United States Department of
Education – Grant to Reduce Alcohol Abuse.
The SDFS Department is pleased to announce that alcohol and
drug use for Sumner County students in grades 6-12 has decreased since 2006 as
compared to the 2008 Student Alcohol and Drug Survey.Comparative data is shown below:

The decrease can be attributed to increased efforts in both
